Belows...
The first time the old timeprisoner Red (Morgan Freeman) has seen Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) moved in the Shawshank State Penitentiary, he bet than the newcommer Andy could not stand his first night in jail. Althought he looks quiet and peacefull, Andy was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences because of the murder of his wife and her lover. Time flies and Red and Andy becomes friends. Red who was dismissed of several paroles attempts has no more illusions about his life in prison. Andy, on the contrary, never fail to find some hope...
Why I like this movie: A piece of humanity. It's how i can resume the best this movie. Frank Darabont has done a masterpiece based on the book written by Stephen King. Actors are on top (especially Morgan Freeman). The narration is well done. We follow easily Andy & Red through 20 years of time. It's interesting to note that the prisoners are finally more human than the people who are supposed to guard them (the Warden and the chief of guards). And, the end is just epic. It's still considered as one of the best movie of all time.
Anecdotes: Kevin Costner, Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks has been considered for the role of Andy Dufresne... In the original Stephen King's story, Red is an irish white guy... William Sadler who play one of the prisoner, is in the cast of Darabont next movie "The Green Mile" (another Stephen King's adaptation)... The movie gets seven nonimations for Academy Award in 1994 but didn't win one...
Critics: "The Shawshank Redemption" gets a score of 8.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 65 critics) and a score of 4.5/5 on AlloCine (which classed the movie 14th on the greatest movie of all-time list)
